🎉🇺🇸 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out today to celebrate our incredible Veterans! Your presence made the day even more special. A big shoutout to Jeffery Gallegos for delivering an inspiring presentation to our secondary students – it was truly impactful! 🙌👏 Also, hats off to Josh Lopez for leading a beautiful Taps ceremony for the entire school. It was a moving tribute to those who served. 🎺 I want to recognize Dylan Grey for representing our student crew so well and playing an amazing guitar piece that touched every heart in the room. 🎸💖 Lastly, thank you to Debbie Martinez and her dedicated cooking staff, along with our student volunteers, for serving a delicious lunch. We couldn't have done this without all of you! Let’s continue to honor and appreciate our Veterans not just today, but every day! 🌟 #VeteransDay #Gratitude

September came and went about as fast as the leaves changed. The mornings are getting just a little bit colder, days are getting shorter, and soon we will be looking at snow capped moutains throught the Valley. I have started to do site assessments on all of our schools to identify concerns. I am looking at everything from the potential vulnerabilities of unlocked or propped open exterior doors, hazards around the school that pose a safety concern, and safety concerns within the buildings themselves. I am looking at things that are stored in closets that could be a potential hazard such as flammable liquids near electrical boxes or gas boilers. I am checking the types of door handles on each classroom and how they lock from the inside. Other things that I may note are tripping hazards in the buildings and exposed windows in the bathrooms and whether or not they can be looked into from the outside. Doing these assessments are for the safety of our kids, staff, and all that visit. I hope by identifying these things it creates a climate within our buildings that makes everyone feel safe and welcome.

The South Conejos School District Board of Education passed a resolution opposing Amendment 80, "Constitutional Right to School Choice," that would guarantee access to school choice in the Colorado Constitution. The amendment also names private schools and “future innovations in education” as options guaranteed by the Constitution. This amendment could take critical funding away from public schools, further exacerbating challenges in rural districts while subsidizing private schools on the Front Range. This amendment is unnecessary, as we have had open enrollment laws in Colorado for 30 years.

SOUTH CONEJOS SCHOOL DISTRICT RE-10 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE SOUTH CONEJOS SCHOOL DISTRICT RE-10 IN OPPOSITION OF AMENDMENT 80 WHEREAS, Colorado has a longstanding commitment to school choice, beginning with the Public Schools of Choice Act of 1990 and the Charter Schools Act of 1993; and WHEREAS, state law consistently provides residents with a range of educational options, including public, charter, and open-enrollment schools; and WHEREAS, the Board recognizes that Amendment 80, "School Choice in K-12 Education" seeks to amend the Colorado Constitution to create a constitutionally protected right to school choice for K-12 students and their parents; and WHEREAS, Amendment 80 potentially creates a pathway for public funds to be redirected to private institutions through vouchers, Education Savings Accounts, or other programs, thereby threatening the financial stability and sustainability of Colorado's public schools; and WHEREAS, the inclusion of private education in Amendment 80 could divert public funds to private institutions, undermining the public schools; and WHEREAS, Amendment 80 does not clearly define the rights of parents and students or how those rights will intersect with the district's legal responsibilities; and WHEREAS, the long-term impact of Amendment 80 remains uncertain, as its effects will depend on subsequent legislation and judicial interpretations; and WHEREAS, the Board believes the existing school choice framework already provides ample educational opportunities that enable parents to choose an education program that meets their diverse needs; and WHEREAS, the Board strongly advocates for adequate funding for public education in Colorado; and WHEREAS, the Board is in support of school choice, and is opposed to public dollars going to private institutions; and WHEREAS, several education advocacy organizations have publicly opposed Amendment 80, citing concerns about its potentially harmful impact on Colorado's public schools; and WHEREAS, the Board declares that Amendment 80 poses a significant risk to the funding and health of Colorado's public education system. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the South Conejos School District Board of Education officially declares its opposition to Amendment 80 and believes this stance is in the best interest of public education
DATED and APPROVED as of this Fourteenth day of October 2024.
