Check out the September Newsletter from our School Resource Officer, Rodney Noga!
10 days ago, Victoria Lopez
My introduction letter for the year My name is Rodney Noga, and I am the School Resource Officer (SRO) for the Conejos County Sheriff's Department, assigned to the North Conejos, Sanford, and South Conejos school districts within Conejos County. This is my second school year as the SRO. I retired as a master sergeant from the Colorado State Patrol after 25 years. I spent a little over 14 years in La Junta as a trooper and was promoted to sergeant in Alamosa at the end of 2012. I have always loved the San Luis Valley and have called it home for over 11 years now. I have been married to my beautiful wife for 32 years and have two daughters, ages 22 and 13. I love to hunt, fish, and play golf. What exactly is an SRO? Following the National Association of School Resource Officers triad model, an SRO is three things: a law enforcement officer, educator, and informal counselor / mentor. I am a resource to help promote a safe learning environment within our schools. I enforce laws when needed but, as a law enforcement officer, school safety is my number one priority in that role. I work closely with the school administration, who will handle most incidents that come up within our schools. As an educator, I can speak to the students on many topics that could range from laws, drugs and alcohol, Internet safety, making good choices, and many more topics the teachers and students want. Finally, as an informal counselor and mentor, I am there to help our youth navigate school and life. I want to help every student succeed to their fullest potential. I am a trusted adult who will always have an ear when a student is struggling with life, school, friends, and so on, as well as help them find their way. I not only visit the classrooms and take an interest in what they are doing but also help them with schoolwork when I can. As my title implies, I am a resource for our students, staff, and parents.
Community survey results This summer I put out a survey through the schools about our school resource officer program. I asked just a few simple questions about what our community knew or did not know about the school resource officer. Here are the results of that survey: • 92 people responded from the three different school districts. • 73% knew the schools had an SRO and 27% did not. • 58% knew what the role of an SRO is and 42% did not. • 66% have seen or read the newsletter and 33% have not. • 71% said they would be interested in attending training or discussion about topics and 29% said they would not. Some of the topics that were mentioned were bullying, student safety, drugs, electronic devices and social media, situational awareness / active shooter safety, community involvement, and how parents can help. Throughout the year I will touch on some of these topics in the newsletter. I will find time to put on community discussions in the different schools to talk about some of these as well. I would love for the community and parents to come to these to not only meet me in person if you have not already, but to come together to tackle issues that our students are facing. I look forward to meeting more of you that I have not already met and working with everyone to help our students succeed.

Trojan Families, Our SECURE status has been lifted. We are now operating as normal.
about 1 month ago, Joshua Lopez
Good morning Trojan Families, South Conejos School District is increasing our security to SECURE. This is just a precaution based on information from our Sheriff’s office. What does it mean when we go SECURE? Everyone is required to stay inside our buildings, and we lock all outside doors. We increase our situational awareness and do business as usual. We have attached our security procedures that we follow on our Facebook page and our website if you would like to familiarize yourself with our procedures. We will update parents and guardians if anything should change. All students and staff are accounted for and safe.
