A group of eager Antonito High School students gathered on Thursday afternoon, just before spring break, on the banks of the Conejos River. The excitement in the air was obvious, a mixture of pride and anticipation. For months, they had been part of the Trout in the Classroom (TIC) Project, raising trout from tiny eggs to lively fry in their classroom aquarium. Throughout the process, they learned about water resources, ecosystems, and the delicate balance that sustains life in the natural world. The project had been more than just a science experiment; it had become a journey of responsibility and discovery. Each student had taken turns ensuring the water temperature was just right, observing the growth of their trout, and carefully monitoring their development. They had witnessed firsthand the life cycle of the trout, from egg to fry, and in the process, learned to appreciate the fragility of the environment. Now, with their trout ready for the next stage in life, the students stood together, gazing at the clear, flowing river. It was time for the fry to take their place in the wild, where they would continue their journey in the Conejos River. With a sense of accomplishment and respect for the river, the students gently released their fry into the cool current. One by one, the fish darted away, slipping into the river’s embrace as they began their new life.

As the middle school wrestling season came to an end, it was clear that this year had been one of growth, determination, and unforgettable moments. Six of our wrestlers qualified for State, a remarkable achievement in itself. Out of those six, four were first-time wrestlers, each stepping onto the mat with no prior experience but plenty of heart. Though the State competition didn’t go exactly as we had hoped for each of our wrestlers, the journey itself was nothing short of inspiring. Among our athletes, Jaylah Ruybal stood out. As a first-time wrestler, no one could have predicted the incredible journey she would have. Jaylah fought her way all the way to the state finals, ultimately placing 2nd in the Middle School Girls 116lb division. It was a moment of immense pride for her, her teammates, and her coach. What made this season truly special was the growth of each of our wrestlers. From the very first practice to the final match at State, they showed resilience, grit, and a willingness to learn. Watching them transform, not just as athletes, but as young individuals gaining confidence in themselves with every challenge, was a gift. Every match was a step toward becoming stronger, both mentally and physically, and the progress they made in such a short season was incredible. We are so proud of these athletes, not just for their achievements but for their dedication, work ethic, and the spirit they brought to every practice and match. While the season may be over, the lessons they learned and the memories they made will stay with them for a lifetime. State Qualifiers: Juliana Rendon - 7th Place at regionals Alexis Olivas - 7th Place at regionals Laycee Maez - 6th Place at regionals Jaylah Ruybal - 3rd Place at regionals Adrik Abeyta - 4th Place at regionals Hagen Bradley - 4th Place at regionals

We had an amazing Community Helper Presentation on Monday, March 10th! Our students learned so much from our local Fire Department, School Officer, Eagle Air Med, and EMT's. They covered important topics like fire safety and how to use 911, and were introduced to all the incredible people who work hard to keep our community safe. The excitement continued outside with a tour of the emergency vehicles and an unforgettable landing of the Eagle Air Med! A huge THANK YOU to all our presenters for taking the time to share their knowledge and passion with our students. We are so grateful for everything you do for our community!

Message Corner Can you believe that we already had to spring the clocks forward? Now it will be darker later, wind will start blowing even more, and spring break is only a week away. Just wanted to pass along a friendly reminder about driving safely in our school zones. Recently I have seen and have received complaints about vehicles pulling into Centauri High School and Middle School campuses that are driving too fast. Please remember that in the parking lots, there is going to be pedestrian traffic. If you are driving too fast you may not be able to stop in time before something bad happens and someone is hit. Slow down, eyes forward and phone down. Thanks!! I also want to thank our schools, staff, students, and communities for the great support and thanks that our School Resource Officer Unit has been receiving lately. Deputy Lujan and I have a great time with our kids and want to help them in any way possible. We will always strive to build positive relationships. We truly love what we do! Great kids, doing great things!! Reading my newsletter may get you lunch on me! My last newsletter asked: Who was the commander of Fort Garland from 1866–1867, and why did he resign his commission? Ava Jarvies of Sanford HS and Samuel Chavez of Centauri MS both gave me the correct answer. Kit Carson was the commander and he had to leave due to health reasons. Thanks for reading my newsletter kids and keep on reading!! William, Jared and Josh from Sanford HS put together a project for FCCLA about drugs, addiction and recovery. They interviewed me and Deputy Lujan about the problem of drugs in our communities. We helped arrange a speaker to come. Paul Reed spoke to the students about overcoming adversity. His wife Kimberly and he started Hope in the Valley for rehabilitation services. Thank you, Paul and Kimberly, for speaking to our kids and for what you do!!
South Conejos held a first responder safety event learning from each on what they do. They were able to see Eagle Air Med land, walk through the ambulance, check out the fire truck, and my patrol truck. I even got some treasured note cards from a lot of them. I love my kids!!! Teen dating violence and healthy relationships Is this you or do you know someone that has a relationship like this? These things listed are not and never should be a part of a loving and healthy relationship. If you need help and are being controlled or abused, please reach out.
STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT BOUND!!!! Congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ teams from Centauri and Sanford for placing first in their regional tournament. State bound this coming weekend for a chance at the title. Leave it all on the court Falcons and Mustangs and bring home the CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
